Background
Most previous attempts to determine the psychological cost of military deployment have been limited by reliance on convenience samples, lack of pre-deployment data or confidentiality and cross-sectional designs.
AimsThis study addressed these limitations using a population-based, prospective cohort of US military personnel deployed in support of the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
MethodThe sample consisted of US military service members in all branches including active duty, reserve and national guard who deployed once (n = 3393) or multiple times (n = 4394). Self-reported symptoms of post-traumatic stress were obtained prior to deployment and at two follow-ups spaced 3 years apart. Data were examined for longitudinal trajectories using latent growth mixture modelling.
ResultsEach analysis revealed remarkably similar post-traumatic stress trajectories across time. The most common pattern was low–stable post-traumatic stress or resilience (83.1% single deployers, 84.9% multiple deployers), moderate–improving (8.0%, 8.5%), then worsening–chronic posttraumatic stress (6.7%, 4.5%), high–stable (2.2% single deployers only) and high–improving (2.2% multiple deployers only). Covariates associated with each trajectory were identified.
ConclusionsThe final models exhibited similar types of trajectories for single and multiple deployers; most notably, the stable trajectory of low post-traumatic stress pre- to post-deployment, or resilience, was exceptionally high. Several factors predicting trajectories were identified, which we hope will assist in future research aimed at decreasing the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder among deployers.

In a sample of 18-, 30-, and 42-month-olds, the relations among parenting, effortful control (EC), and maladjustment were examined. Parenting was assessed with mothers' reports and observations; EC was measured with mothers' and caregivers' reports, as well as a behavioral task; and externalizing and internalizing symptoms were assessed with parents' and caregivers' reports. Although 18-month unsupportive (vs. supportive) parenting negatively predicted EC at 30 months, when the stability of these variables was taken into account, there was no evidence of additional potentially causal relations between these two constructs. Although EC was negatively related to both internalizing and externalizing problems within all three ages as well as across 1 year, EC did not predict maladjustment once the stability of the constructs and within time covariation between the constructs were taken into account. In addition, externalizing problems at 30 months negatively predicted EC at 42 months, and internalizing problems at 30 months positively predicted EC at 42 months, but only when the effects of externalizing on EC were controlled. The findings are discussed in terms of the reasons for the lack of causal relations over time.

Phonological processes have been used to describe children’s speech for a number of years, but the causes of most processes remain unexplained. In a study investigating possible sources of processes in children’s speech, Aitchison and Chiat (1981) suggested that many developmental phonological processes may be a result of problems in lexical storage and retrieval. One limitation of their study, however, was that they had no adult control group, whose results might have helped clarify their findings. The present research with adults was similar to Aitchison and Chiat’s investigation with children and was intended to provide additional information about whether children’s typical phonological processes generally involve lexical storage and recall difficulties. Caution is advised in assuming that children’s spontaneous phonological processes are generally a result of lexical storage and recall factors.

Sleep disorders exact a high toll on society in terms of diminished quality of life, reduced productivity and cost to medical services. This book guides the reader through the basic science of sleep and how to evaluate individuals suffering from sleep irregularities. Complex features of sleep disorders are then discussed, including parasomnias, sleep apnea, night terrors and restless legs syndrome. The book also looks at how these sleep abnormalities can affect individuals with other psychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, depression and anxiety disorders. Covering disorders from insomnia to narcolepsy, and specialty areas from pediatric to geriatric, this wide ranging and accessible guide allows non-sleep specialists to approach and understand important information that is clinically relevant in everyday practice. Illustrated with summary tables, figures and treatment algorithms, this book will be a useful guide for neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, pulmonologists and internists as well as health care professionals in training.

Summary
This chapter describes a selection of neurological diseases, those which are most strongly associated with sleep disorders. Certain neurological disorders include Parkinson's disease (PD), stroke, neuromuscular diseases, headache, multiple sclerosis, and epilepsy. Sleep breathing disorders are common in PD. About half of all individuals with PD show obstructive sleep-disordered breathing. Snoring, which almost invariably accompanies obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), is reported to be a risk factor for stroke. The quality of life in those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis correlates with both daytime respiratory muscle function and polysomnographic indices of nocturnal sleep-related respiratory disturbances. Improved sleep architecture and daytime arterial blood gases, and increased ventilatory response to carbon dioxide, result from nocturnal ventilation in neuromuscular disease. In a study of 14 children with neuromuscular disease, symptoms of daytime sleepiness and headache improved after initiation of non-invasive ventilation. Epileptic seizures during REM sleep are an extremely rare phenomenon.

Summary
Parasomnias involve automatic behavior, i.e., seemingly goal-directed, complex purposeful behaviors enacted without the conscious awareness and volition of the individual, who cannot exercise conscious deliberate control over his or her behaviors and sleep-related experiences. It could be subdivided by taking into account the motoric versus autonomic/ sensory activation. This chapter deals with the most common disorders, covering the appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Disorders of arousal include sleepwalking or somnambulism, sleep terrors, and confusional arousals. The pathophysiology of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) lies in a dysfunction of the brainstem structures modulating REM sleep. Enuresis consists of recurrent involuntary urination during sleep. It includes primary forms, where bladder control has never been achieved, and secondary variants occurring after a period of bladder control. Catathrenia, also known as nocturnal groaning or expiratory vocalization during sleep, consists of the emission of an unusual expiratory noise occurring in bursts without associated motor phenomena.

The relations of children's coping strategies and coping efficacy to parent socialization and child adjustment were examined in a sample of school-age children that included families in which some of the grandparents and/or parents had an alcoholism diagnosis. Parents and older children reported on the children's coping strategies; parents reported on their parenting behavior; and teachers reported on children's externalizing and internalizing problems. Measures of parent socialization were associated with parents' and children's reports of active coping strategies and parents' reports of both support-seeking coping and coping efficacy. Some of these relations were moderated by familial alcohol status. Children higher in parent-reported active/support-seeking coping and coping efficacy were rated lower in teacher-reported externalizing and internalizing adjustment problems. The findings were consistent with the view that active/support-seeking coping and coping efficacy mediated the association of parent socialization to children's psychological adjustment and that this relation was sometimes moderated by parental alcohol status.

Summary
Introduction
Arboreal rodents were selected as a focal group because of their obvious association with forest canopies and relevance to forest management. The close association of arboreal rodents with trees predisposes them to being impacted by timber harvests (Carey 1989, Aubry et al. 2003, Hallett et al. 2003). Trees provide food, thermal and escape cover, shade, moisture and free water, and cavities that provide nest sites and safe refugia from avian and mammalian predators (Carey 1989, Carey et al. 1999, Aubry 2003). Carey (1989) characterized arboreal rodents according to their degree of dependence on trees for various activities and identified the following stand elements as important to their biology: large live trees, large snags, fallen trees, woody debris, multilayered canopy, overstory and understory diversity, and epiphytes. Additionally, he listed stand stability and landscape contiguity as important attributes with dense underbrush, streamsides, rock, and talus as special features (Carey 1989). More recent studies (e.g., Rosenberg and Anthony 1992, Waters and Zabel 1995, Smith and Nichols 2003) provide new information to examine the conclusions of Carey (1989), which serve as useful hypotheses regarding influences of forest management on arboreal rodent populations in western coniferous forests.
We selected species that are reputed late-seral forest habitat specialists or are known to be important prey for the northern spotted owl (Forsman et al. 2001, Hamer et al. 2001), the American marten (Buskirk and Ruggiero 1994, Ben-David et al. 1997), or the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis, Lewis 2001).
